My husband and I are coming to Kauai and staying in Hanalei in July. We are wondering if you can tell us if there will be waves in July and is it safe to snorkel in the Hanalei Bay ? Thank you, Andrea
Aloha Andrea,
The north shore beaches are generally pretty flat because the storms come in from the south in the summertime. Swells can come up at any time though so I would recommend that you check daily ocean conditions at www.KauaiExplorer.com and consult with a lifeguard when at the beach. The website is a wealth of information about the local beaches, hikes, and conditions.
Hanalei Bay is not good for snorkeling because it has a sand bottom and there are not any reefs to attract fish. You should try Makua Beach (Tunnels) or Ke'e Beach in Haena for some great snorkeling.
